Non-Profit Spolight: Camp Hodia

Looking to give back to your community this summer? Camp Hodia is a wonderful organization for children with type 1 diabetes. Campers learn how to make healthy lifestyle choices that enable them to strong and full life. With an experienced staff, campers are in the best type of environment to experience the great outdoors while staying in control of their diabetes.
Started back in 1978 by Don Scott, Camp Hodia has grown and grown into an incredible program that offers everything from ski camp to backpacking expeditions. Campers learn from staff and fellow friends, most of whom live with type 1 diabetes themselves. Designated classes help educate campers about how to manage their diabetes, but the everyday discussions and life at camp produce the most memorable teaching moments. Of course, just like any other summer camp, children get to the most fun activities, such as archery, whitewater rafting, crafts, and campfire rings. Campers have an absolute blast during their time at Camp Hodia.
You might be thinking, “But I’m an adult who doesn’t have type 1 diabetes. What’s my role at Camp Hodia?” Keep reading. One of Camp Hodia’s missions is to allow any child, regardless of financial position, to have a blast at camp. Through fundraising and generous donations, Camp Hodia can provide scholarships for close to 50% of their campers. If giving is one of your gifts, consider donating to Camp Hodia. If you want to give in a more hands on way, participate in one of their many fundraising events. Bring your family to Idaho Falls for a fun-filled bowling tournament or saddle up your house and join other equestrians at the 23rd Annual Diabetes Ride. Camp Hodia is also nearly completely run by volunteers. If you have a medical background or simply love to serve, consider signing up to volunteer on staff at Camp Hodia this summer.
